Aadhaar deadline extended indefinitelyThe Supreme Court has postponed the March 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile numbers indefinitely.

The apex court has extended the deadline until the five-member constitution bench disposes of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016.

However, for subsidies or direct benefit transfers, the court clarified that Aadhaar would remain mandatory.

On December 15, 2017, the bench extended the deadline till March 31, 2018.

The constitution bench comprised of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan.

According to legal news website Live Law, the deadline for linking Aadhaar has been extended for all services and facilities including the issuance of passports. However, Aadhaar is required for applying for passports under Tatkal scheme.

UIDAI, meanwhile, tweeted that Aadhaar is needed for opening new bank accounts.
