Store car documents on DigiLocker, and show to traffic copsWe had written about DigiLocker earlier. A DigiLocker is a cloud storage space introduced by the government which will help you store important documents issued by about 37 different issuers currently (like Govt departments/agencies, educational institutions and financial institutions). All the documents are stored in a cloud-based application for safe and easy access.

The government has said that Driving License (DL) and Registration Certificate (RC) uploaded on DigiLocker will be accepted by the traffic police. After Karnataka Police declined to accept digital copies, the transport department had issued a circular stating that digital certificates downloaded by citizens into their Digilocker will be deemed as originals.

The circular asked traffic police and other authorities to treat DigiLocker documents at par with certificates issued by the Regional Transport Offices in the form of a smart card or paper.

Moreover, the government has stated (see FAQs) that the documents like DL and RC stored in DigiLocker have to be treated as a legally valid document according to Indian IT Act 2000.

So, here, we explain how you can upload your DL and RC in DigiLocker and save the pain of carrying original documents along with you all the time.

Read on.

Step 1

Visit the website: https://digilocker.gov.in/. If you haven’t registered before, click on “Sign Up” for registration.

Step 2

Enter your mobile number. You will need to provide the mobile number that you used for registering your Aadhaar. After entering your mobile number, a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent to the number. Enter the OTP sent. You can create your own user id and password for registering on DigiLocker.

Step 3

Enter your Aadhaar number and click on the checkbox to agree to terms and conditions. Then click on the “SUBMIT” button. Your account will be created. You have to verify your Aadhaar number and enter OTP to access the DigiLocker menu.

Step 4

Click on ‘check partners’. From the ‘Partner Name’ drop-down select the transport department of your state. Some people might have to select ‘Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, All states’ for getting the documents.

You can select DL from the ‘Document Type’ drop-down menu. Provide your DL number. Your DL will get added to the DigiLocker account.

Step 5

Go to ‘check partners’. Select the transport department of your state and RC from the drop-down menu. Enter your vehicle’s number and chassis number. Provide details regarding whether you are the owner of the vehicle. If you are not the owner, you might need to enter the name and DL number of the owner. Click on view document and you can get a pdf of the RC.

Step 6

You can follow the same process for getting the Emission Certificate for your vehicle.

You can upload your vehicle’s documents using the DigiLocker mobile app too. You have to install the app on your Android smartphone. You can upload the documents on your mobile using the same process as for the website.

You can view the documents or download the documents on your mobile. You can show the documents on the DigiLocker to the traffic police in case you are asked for them.
