However, from April 1 onwards, it is mandatory to quote as well as link Aadhaar number while filing an income tax return unless otherwise exempted
The last date for mandatory Aadhaar-PAN linking was March 31, 2019. But with a large number of PAN holders yet to link their accounts with Aadhaar, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the last date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking it with Permanent Account Number (PAN) by six months. So, now the new deadline is September 30, 2019.
“The matter has been considered by the Central Government and now the cut-off date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking PAN with Aadhaar is 30.09.2019, unless specifically exempted,” CBDT said statement.
Do remember from April 1 onwards, it will be mandatory to quote as well as link Aadhaar number while filing an income tax return. This stands unless one is specifically exempted from paying taxes.
This is a must-do task for PAN holders who file Income Tax Return (ITR). Linking Aadhaar with the PAN will be mandatory for filing ITR for the assessment year 2019-20.
If PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, the tax return may not be accepted.
There were reports that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by March 31 may be invalidated, following which the matter was considered by the government and the date extended till September 30.
“Notwithstanding the last date of intimating/linking of Aadhaar Number with PAN being September 30, 2019, it is also made clear that w.e.f. April 1, 2019, it is mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar number while filing the return of income,” it added.
