The last date for mandatory Aadhaar-PAN linking is March 31, 2019. This is a must-do task for PAN holders who file Income Tax Return (ITR). Linking Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be mandatory for filing ITR for the assessment year 2019-20. This means if PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, the tax return will not be accepted.
There are crores of people who have not linked Aadhaar and PAN. Only about 23 crore PAN card holders of the total 42 crore have linked their cards with biometric ID Aadhaar, reports say. This means another 20-21 crore have not done it.
As per the Income Tax department, the constitutional validity of Aadhaar has been upheld by the Supreme Court of India in September 2018. “Consequently, in terms of Section 139AA of Income Tax Act., 1961 and order dated 30.6.2018 of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory now which has to be completed till 31.3.2019 by the PAN holders requiring filing of Income Tax Return,” said I-T department on their website.
By linking with Aadhaar, the Income Tax department will know whether there are any duplicate PAN or not. There are certain duplicate PANs.
Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It is a 12 digit number.
PAN is a 10-digit combination of letters and numbers. PAN is given by I-T department.
